sabio is SUSTAINABLE

Sabio Coffee is vertically integrated coffee operation that produces, processes and exports specialty coffee directly from our farm in Nicaragua to the rest of the world. Through research, innovation, experimentation, and sustainable farming practices, we continue to push the envelope on our quest to produce to perfect cup of coffee without damaging our planet. Some of our current environmental practices are:

...
We work only with renewable energy. Our farm Finca Aurora runs entirely in hydroelectric energy.
...
Logging, the extraction of any type of native plants, hunting of any animals and the use of dangerous herbicides is strictly prohibited in all farm grounds.
...
We work consistently in conserving our water sources and have planted bamboo on the outskirts of all water sources. Bamboo trees aid in reducing sediment flowing into water sources and repair the wetlands adjacent to rivers and streams. Bamboo also aids in stabilizing the soils which prevents floods and landslides.
...
All coffee pulp is used as organic matter at the coffee nurseries and plantations.
...
We are a carbon neutral operation.
...
In between all coffee groves, we have planted Mombasa grass (Panicum maximum); this grass has a deep root system that stabilizes the soils without affecting the nutrient uptake of the coffee plants. As the grass grows, it is removed by hand and left on the soil to serve as organic matter. This practice also provides a source of labor for many workers during the off-season.
...
We count with an environmentally friendly system of septic tanks and drain fields to properly recycle all residual waters.
...
We are a RFA/UTZ Certified operation.
...
Over half of our farm territory is exclusively natural reserves. For every hectare of coffee, there is a hectare of natural reserves and coffee plantations are not expanded beyond the lots already assigned for crop production.
...
The use of guava and banana trees as shade in all coffee plantations provides a constant source of timber used in combination with coffee husk all year round for the kitchens and the ovens that power mechanical drying during the harvest season.
...
The coffee pulping and sorting unit used at the wet mill is the UDC-7500 Bourbon by Penagos. This advanced unit pulps ripe cherries through a vertical pulper with smart water-less pulping channels which complement our water conservation efforts.
